Getting Ready For The Hummers

Each April ruby-throated hummingbirds return to Missouri to begin nesting in May and, when they arrive, we are ready! We absolutely delight in watching them feed among the flowers in our yard and at our feeders! 🌺

Hummingbird Feeder
We received this hummingbird feeder as a Christmas gift. Isn't it pretty? 💗

Sugar and Water
Attracting hummingbirds to your yard is easy. Plant native red and orange flowers (native honeysuckle, trumpet creeper, columbine, and cardinal flower are good choices) or hang feeders and fill with a simple nectar consisting of one part sugar to four parts water.

Hummingbird Nectar

Mix the sugar and water together in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Once the sugar is dissolved, shut the burner off and allow mixture to cool completely before filling feeder and, contrary to popular belief, you do NOT need to add red food coloring to your hummingbird nectar. In fact, it's best that you don't.

Arrival of Its First Guest of the Season
Be sure to clean feeders well to reduce the growth of bacteria, and change the nectar weekly, or more often, if it becomes cloudy. Never use honey or artificial sweeteners when making hummingbird nectar.

How about you? Do you enjoy watching and feeding the hummingbirds in your yard? If so, feel free to share your experiences and tips in the comment section below. 💗

Until next time...

    1. It's such a joy to watch and feed the birds in your own back yard...isn't it. I was just watching a hummingbird feeding at the new feeder a few minutes ago. It's the first that I've seen this year. Blessings for a lovely week ahead! Thanks for stopping in! <3
