I work as a naturalist at a state park here in southwest Missouri and one of the things that I look forward to most in autumn is seeing the prairie criss-crossed and laced with spider webs on damp and dewy mornings.
There are an estimated 2 1/2 million individual spiders per acre in Missouri's grasslands. That makes for a lot of spider webs on a 4,000 acre prairie!
Under normal conditions you wouldn't even notice most of the spider webs on the prairie, but, when cool autumn mornings arrive, every web is outlined in dewy droplets of water.
In sunlight they sparkle and shine like gossamer threads strung with fine diamonds. It truly is a sight to behold!
Spider webs in autumn? Definitely one of the joys of autumn on Missouri's tallgrass prairie.
